Twiin: A Revolutionary Digital Health Assistant
17.09.2024
In a world where technology is constantly evolving and support needs are becoming increasingly diverse, the Alliance for Public Health (APH) of Ukraine is making a breakthrough. They are introducing an innovative project called Twiin – a virtual assistant designed to provide timely support and expert consultations on a wide range of health issues.
But what exactly is Twiin? Imagine a digital assistant that’s always by your side, ready to help you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Twiin creates a safe and confidential space where you can discuss the most important aspects of your health. Developed by a team of APH experts, it responds quickly and accurately to your questions, providing access to critical information at any time.
The unique feature of Twiin is that it offers you a choice of four distinct characters – Mykhailo, Sofia, Sasha, and Illya. Each has their own life experience and expertise, allowing you to find a ‘digital twin’ who best understands your specific needs and concerns.
Twiin’s area of expertise is impressively broad. From HIV/AIDS issues to sexual, reproductive, and mental health, as well as harm reduction strategies – this assistant is ready to discuss a wide range of topics. Importantly, Twiin’s knowledge base is constantly updated by experts from the APH, ensuring you have access to the latest and most accurate information on innovative prevention and treatment methods.
One of Twiin’s most valuable features is creating a safe environment for discussing sensitive topics without fear of judgement or stigmatisation. This is particularly important for people who find it difficult to seek help through traditional channels.
Interacting with Twiin is simple and intuitive. You simply ask questions, and Twiin provides personalised answers and recommendations based on its extensive knowledge base. The uniqueness of each of the four characters allows you to choose the ‘digital twin’ that best resonates with your own experience and worldview.
APH has ambitious plans for Twiin’s development. In the future, they plan to expand the number of digital assistants and continually improve their knowledge base. The project’s goal is to provide each user with personalised support and the most up-to-date information in the field of healthcare.
Maria Malakhova, Programme Manager at the APH, emphasises the importance of this project:
“The launch of Twiin is a significant step forward in providing accessible and anonymous online HIV counselling in Ukraine. This tool will also provide substantial support to the community of social workers and infectious disease doctors, which we have been working on for a long time. We’ve come a long way from the inception of the idea to bringing it to life, overcoming many challenges. We are incredibly excited to introduce Twiin to the world. It is particularly important in Ukraine, which is experiencing war, to introduce innovative IT solutions to support the healthcare system. That’s why we chose our country for Twiin’s first pilot project.”
Twiin supports users in various aspects: from providing up-to-date solutions for HIV prevention to expert advice on sexual and reproductive health. It also assists in addiction management, offers mental health support, and creates a safe space for self-acceptance.
For social workers, Twiin becomes an indispensable assistant. It provides quick access to information, automates routine enquiries, supports in complex cases, optimises working time, and improves service quality.

Twiin becomes part of the team for anyone striving for health and well-being, offering friendly support and valuable resources, adapting its assistance to individual needs.
It’s worth noting that Twiin was developed with the support of donors: The Global Fund, Gilead Sciences, and the #SoS_project. This innovative solution has already attracted international attention – Twiin was first presented at the AIDS 2024 international conference in Munich this summer and immediately generated significant interest.
